SAN DIEGO – Special Delivery, a free nutrition services nonprofit organization serving people with AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and kidney disease in San Diego, has received a grant in the amount of $20,000 from Weingart Foundation, announced Ruth Henricks, executive director.
“We are thrilled to receive this very generous award from such a prestigious Southern California organization,” said Henricks. “This contribution will be used to help us continue our work of providing our nutritious meal delivery service and onsite food pantry to over 1,000 unduplicated men, women and children annually in 14 central San Diego neighborhoods.”
Founded in 1951, Weingart Foundation supports nonprofit organizations in the areas of health, human services and education across seven Southern California counties. From 1972 to 2011, the Foundation authorized grants of more than $910 million to support a variety of Southern California social services, educational, and community programs.
Special Delivery has served more than 1.7 million meals to more than 4,700 clients since its founding in
1991. Clients receive two cold meals and one hot meal daily. Special Delivery’s onsite food pantry serves over 1,000 people annually, providing them with pre-packed grocery bags of nonperishable nutritious food items and offering them the ability to shop at no cost for fresh produce and bakery items as well as refrigerated and frozen food items per visit.
