John Hawkes’s performance in The Sessions is being described as reminiscent of Daniel Day-Lewis’ Christy Brown in the classic 1989 film My Left Foot.
Playing the Irish writer who was born with cerebral palsy that prevented him from using any body part but his left foot, Day-Lewis won an Oscar (as did Brenda Fricker playing Christy’s mother).
Yes, it is a typical disease-of-the-week movie in many ways – you know what you’re getting before the movie starts – it’s so well directed by Jim Sheriden and so brilliantly acted by Day-Lewis, it’s hard for even a cranky cynic like me not to like it.
