Tony Bennett

America’s favorite singer for the past 50 years, Tony Bennett’s career has enjoyed three distinct phases, each of them very successful. In the early ‘50s, he scored a series of major hits that made him one of the most popular recording artists of the time. In the early ‘60s, he mounted a comeback as more of an adult-album seller. And from the mid-’80s on, he achieved renewed popularity with generations of listeners who hadn’t been born when he first appeared.

The Human Beast

This new exhibition at The San Diego Museum of Art will explore the many faces of Expressionism, focusing particularly on the artists’ attempt to evoke primal emotion in their depictions of unidealized nudes, the horror of war, or the overstimulation of modern life. Major new acquisitions include works by Otto Dix, Egon Schiele and Max Pechstein, and these join a strong group of Expressionist paintings and drawings that have long been at the Museum of Art, among which are works by Alexej von Jawlensky, Gabriele Münter, Beckmann and George Grosz which are particularly notable.

San Diego Museum of Art, 1450 El Prado in Balboa Park, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., adult admission $12, 619-232-7931, sdmart.org
