AIDS Walk holds training for lead volunteers

AIDS Walk & Run San Diego has announced a series of team leader workshops, designed to provide information and support to team leaders and those interested in forming teams for this year’s event. The 23rd annual AIDS Walk & Run San Diego will take place Sunday, Sept. 30 in Balboa Park.

Team leader workshops are for both new and returning team leaders. The workshops will be offered multiple times so that all team leaders will have an opportunity to attend. Team leaders should contact Ian Johnson, AIDS Walk & Run team coordinator, at 619-692-2077 x 247 or via email at aidswalk@thecentersd.org to register for a session.

Team leader workshops will take place at The San Diego LGBT Community Center, 3909 Centre Street, Thursday, Aug. 9 and Tuesday, Aug. 14 8-9 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.

“Our teams are the lifeblood of this event,” Johnson said. “Being part of a team – and being a team leader – is one of the most fun ways to make a difference. Teams typically account for nearly 70 percent of the funds raised at AIDS Walk. So make sure you have your team signed up and have started on your fundraising. These team leader workshops are great opportunities to hear more about some of the very creative ways that others are building their teams and their fundraising efforts.”

AIDS Walk & Run is San Diego County’s largest one-day HIV/AIDS fundraiser, and last year helped deliver more than $400,000 in grants to 10 local agencies through a unique funding partnership with the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative.

In addition to providing much-needed funding for local HIV/AIDS service organizations that serve the approximately 12,000 people living with HIV in San Diego County, AIDS Walk helps raise awareness about the impact of HIV and AIDS.
