Singer Frank Ocean of Odd Future came out as gay Wednesday after posting a tumblr blog on a same-sex relationship – his first, at the age of 19.
Towerload first reported on speculation of Ocean’s homosexuality after some of his songs were addressed to “he” instead of “she.” The R&B singer then came out later in the day in blog post.
“By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiating with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love, it changed my life. Back then my mind would wander to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and though I was in love with. I reminisced about the sentimental songs I enjoyed when I was a teenager..the ones I played when I experienced a girlfriend for the first time. I realized they were written in a language I did not yet speak. I realized too much too quickly. Imagine being thrown from a plane. I wasn’t in a plane though.”
And though his love was not reciprocated, Ocean says he has realized much along the way. Love is not without risk. And even if love is not returned, the reward of having loved at all is worth the risk of a heart full of ache.
