Fighting for every life threatened by cancer – in every community
Dear Editor,
In recognition of June 2012 being LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) Pride month, Gov. Jerry Brown recently noted that “California has been a leader in advancing the rights of its LGBT citizens.”
The California Division of the American Cancer Society is a leader within the health community, and has determined that working with LGBT people is critical due to this community’s increased risk of tobacco-related cancers, as well as breast, anal, liver and cervical cancers. The Society created a multidisciplinary volunteer and staff team years ago, giving us greater insight into serving the LGBT community and developed a variety of resources to serve the LGBT community and their special needs in the fight against cancer.
The American Cancer Society fights for every life threatened by every cancer – in every community. We fight so that one day, no one has to face cancer. As we deliver on our promise of saving lives, three values set us apart in this fight and make the American Cancer Society unique as an organization. We fight for everyone. We apply wisdom with passion. We get results. These values enable us to create a world with less cancer.
The Society works in California’s diverse communities to reduce disparities and bring us closer to the ultimate goal – to eliminate cancer as a major health problem in every community. This month presents a unique opportunity to accept a new challenge. We invite members of the LGBT community to join us in the fight to create a world with less cancer. Your skills, talents and pride are urgently needed. Together we’ll save more lives and help everyone celebrate more birthdays.
