Mary Cheney and her new wife, Heather Poe, are celebrating wedded bliss today following their nuptials that were exchanged in Washington, D.C. Friday.
Cheney and his wife, Lynne, confirmed the news as they celebrated alongside their daughter.
“Mary and Heather have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognized,” the Cheneys said in a statement. “Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness.”
The couple has been together for more than 20 years and they share two children.
Mary Cheney made headlines during the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign in 2004 for her sexual orientation, facing criticism from both gay activists and conservatives alike. According to the AJC, “gay rights groups have criticized her for not pushing harder for gay marriage” while “social conservatives, like the group Focus on the Family, have criticized her for rearing children in a same-sex relationship.”
Public support for same sex marriage is on a rise according to a new Associated Press poll released Friday. The survey found that 42 percent of respondents opposed gay marriage– a figure that gained position by three points from last year, suggesting a favorable momentum in support of same-sex unions in the United States.
