Let’s thank JCPenney

The JCPenney Father’s Day catalog

San Diego LGBT Weekly is helping lead a campaign to thank and encourage JCPenney for not giving into pressure from One Million Moms (OMM) and the American Family Association (AFA) over featuring gay and lesbian couples in its advertising.

Last month, JCPenney was the focus of homophobic outrage and calls for a boycott after it featured a lesbian couple in its Mother’s Day catalog.

Resisting the homophobic pressure, JCPenney stayed true to its convictions and responded with a Father’s Day ad featuring real-life fathers Todd and Cooper playing with their kids.

The ad, headlined First Pals, followed with the copy:

“What makes Dad so cool? He’s the swim coach, tent maker, best friend, bike fixer and hug giver – all rolled into one. Or two.”

OMM is continuing to push back hard against the retailer, who is one of the first mainstream companies to feature a diversity of families in its advertising to the general public.

Visit LGBTweekly.com to sign the thank you petition to JCPenney and let them see that the LGBT community truly appreciates their celebration of diversity.
