San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders called out mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio at a press conference Wednesday explaining that DeMaio “probably takes credit for my weight loss,” he said. “He probably takes credit for the weeds I pulled in the backyard last week. It’s all bulls—.”

He added, “I want to be very clear that the one councilmember has to have doom and gloom in order to get elected to mayor, but I’m not buying into that, and I don’t think the people in San Diego are, either.”

Sanders held the press conference on the May budget revision and explained that DeMaio’s claims that the city of San Diego is wasting millions of dollars are not true. “I am not a candidate for anything so I don’t have to make up things,” he said. “I don’t have to be on a political doomsday tour to make people think it’s worse than it actually is.”

The comments were prompted after a reporter asked him what he thought about DeMaio taking credit for financial reforms as his campaign spotlight according to reports at KPBS.

When asked for comment, DeMaio said he is going to focus on progress the city’s made according to KPBS.

Sanders has endorsed District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis for mayor.
