Humphrey’s Concerts by the bay have been a staple in San Diego for decades. The uniqueness and intimacy of the outdoor venue sets it apart from other concert and performance spaces in our glorious city. Another differentiator; Humphrey’s always seems to showcase acts that are of great appeal to the LGBT community. The 2012 season is no different.
Openly gay artist Rufus Wainwright will be headlining May 13. Wainwright is known for his outstanding voice, as well as some of his quirky performances. A few years back he had a tour where he sang all of the songs from Judy Garland’s historic performance at Madison Square Garden.
We also have openly lesbian artist, and music trailblazer, k.d. lang performing June 20. lang is an iconic figure in the LGBT community for her incredibly unique voice. Have you heard her version of “Hallelujah” at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia!
LGBT community favorites the Indigo Girls will perform June 15. The Indigo Girls have been LGBT stalwarts for many years for their folk-rock sound. Each member of the duo is an out lesbian.
For those of us over 40, the 2012 season features Olivia Newton-John Sept. 10 and Basia Oct. 5. Newton-John is known for her iconic ’70s and ’80s music, and her portrayal of Sandy in Grease. Basia is known for her adult contemporary/jazz sound most notably her international hit “New Day for You.” Go reminisce about your younger days with these two artists.
If edgy comedy is your thing join Joan Rivers Aug. 16 or Lisa Lampanelli July 13. Lampanelli is a raunchy insult comic who infamously said to Donald Trump at a roast “You have disappointed more women than Sex in the City 2.” Rivers has been an LGBT icon for more than four decades.
There are several other acts that may be of interest to our community: Colbie Caillat, Sheryl Crow, late-night talk-show host Craig Ferguson, Esperanza Spalding, Jewel and Seal featuring Macy Gray.
