The San Diego City Council voted 7-1 Feb. 28 to increase late fees for most parking tickets and to lower the standard 30-day deadline to 21 days before they have to be paid.
This will go into effect July 1 and it means most tickets will cost almost $100 or more if the registered car owner doesn’t pay them before 21 days have passed. A second reading of the change will be held later in March to make it official.
Fifth District Councilmember Carl DeMaio voted no and said he wanted “extensive public outreach” for the public to know about the changes. He said he voted no because of the increased cost to motorists. “It’s not a necessary legal requirement to conform to state guidelines,” said DeMaio.
