The critically-acclaimed opera ‘Prima Donna’ debuted Sunday at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York after nearly three years of hiatus from its premiere at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, England. Actors Angelica Houston, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, and Wainwright himself appeared on-stage for its U.S. unveiling.
The opera, written in French with English subtitles, features Regine Saint Laurent, a “forgotten soprano,” for a come-back to the stage as “Alienor d’Aquitaine.” As for the opera’s characters, according to the Huffington Post, “Regine is panic-stricken about reprising Alienor, convinced her voice is forever gone. In her somewhat deranged state, she latches on to a young journalist who is all too ready to lavish attention on her,” in what makes for her memorable and applauded performance.
Although the opera received mixed reviews in England, its U.S. debut has enjoyed mainly positive considerations including reviews on its stylish backdrops, energetic and emotional performances, and what the Huffington Post dubs as a “subtle, effective ending.”
The plot has thrilled viewers through its continuous build-up, eventually leading spectators into a deserved twist at the opera’s finale.
