The Uptown Planners will collaborate on the Hillcrest Pride Flag project on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 6pm at the Joyce Beers Community Center on Vermont Street just north of University Avenue. Hillcrest residents and those in surrounding areas are invited to participate in the meeting to let the planners know that the flag project is important to the neighborhood.

The Hillcrest Pride Flag Project was first presented to the committee on Oct. 4, 2011 in an effort to put the initiative on the table for voting at a future meeting. The board will reassess the project and how it will affect the community in Tuesday’s meeting.

If implemented, the project would feature a 65-foot flag pole flying a rainbow flag at the intersection of Normal Street and University Avenue. A small plaza would surround the flag area.

The Uptown Planners committee is an advisory board that makes recommendations to the City of San Diego on land use and projects within the uptown area which includes Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, Mission Hills, and Park West neighborhoods.

Tuesday’s meeting would be the first in a three-step approval process which, if passed, would also require a vote by the San Diego Planning Commission, followed by an approval from the City Council.

  1. Can someone tell me if this flagpole is going to have the US flag on top? Not putting the US flag first would be an insult to every single veteran and active duty soldier in our community, throughout San Diego, the US and around the world.

The very freedom that we enjoy in Hillcrest is a direct result of the brave men and women that sacrificed their lives in defense of our nation.

Why would we insult every one of these people and every other American intentionally – and for years and years to come?
