The 2011 MLK All People’s Break-fast will be held on January 17th at the San Diego Conven-tion Center at 7:30 am. Founded in the 1970’s by a coalition of local civil rights, labor, and faith leaders, the breakfast serves to honor Dr. King by providing the time and space to reflect, memorialize and sustain his compelling legacy. For more than 20 years, this singular event has offered San Diegans the occasion to come together in celebration of shared values of peace, tolerance and equality for all people. It is the region’s largest annual convening of organizations and individuals who care and work toward these critical civic ideals.

Hosted by Equality Al-liance of San Diego County, the theme of this year’s breakfast is The Media and the Movement: From apathy to activism, media as a force for social change. Delivering the keynote address will be Jehmu Greene, a commentator for Fox News. Ms. Greene is the former president of the Women’s Media Center, a New York-based, national nonprofit organization working to ensure women are powerfully and visibly represented in the media. She also previously served as president of Rock the Vote, orchestrating its expansion from a 1,500-member organization to an iconic vehicle for young voter registration and em-powerment with more than 1 million members.

In addition to Greene, the program will feature acclaimed local artists and ac-tiv-ists, a Com-munity Space and community bloggers and youth videographers. Veteran journalist and news anchor Dan Rather will provide brief remarks via videotape, recalling his fateful April 4, 1968 reporting of the assassination of Dr. King. Rather will discuss the terrific challenges and revolutionary outcomes of television journalism during the ‘60s. Morris Casuto, recently retired regional director of the San Diego Anti Defama-tion League, will be honored with the 2011 San Diego Human Relations Commission’s Ashley L. Walker Social Justice Award.
