If you weren’t able to check out all the art labs that participated in the Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair, back in September, then you have another chance to experience the performance from that event at Agitprop in North Park.
The artists involved in Art(ist) in Context II: or How I Learned to Scrub the City of Undesirable Elements and InScribe Economic Viability onto the Urban Landscape will be reprising their 30 minute performance and installation Friday, Oct. 28.
Although the title seems like one you might expect for a dry seminar in a worn out banquet room at a Mission Valley hotel, the collaborative performance defies that vibe. The five disparate artists involved in the project will take its audience on a journey from a cozy low-life speakeasy/gambling parlor to a full throttle factory churning out posters. Local musicians, Rio Gadjo will be contributing to the smoky gin-joint vibe.
Since 2007, Agitprop has been a dynamo of activity in North Park creating, exhibiting and inspiring many different socially responsive art projects; and this one is no different. So, take your seat at the card table and watch a bit of history unfold.
Free, but get there a little early to guarantee a good view, agitpropspace.org.

A Sinful Twist on the Haunted House
If you don’t feel like forking over $10-$12.50 for another Nightmare on Normal Street head down to the East Village and Space 4 Art for A Sinful Twist on the Haunted House – a joint project between Space 4 Art and local performance/literary organization So Say We All. These two local arts organizations have been busy lately, putting together an array of interesting joint ventures. This one will involve local artists interpreting contemporary manifestations of sin in an outdoor Hell House. The night will include Mr. Tube & The Flying Objects; DJ The Night Rocker surrounding one and all with spooky sounds; horror movie trailers on the big screen curated by Craig Oliver of Citizen Video Fame; trick or treat surprises in 35 open artist studios; the San Diego Guild of Puppetry’s Felix Diaz leading a procession of drums and giant puppets and of course beer, tacos and costumes.
Coincidentally, Sinful Twist happens on the very same night that Space 4 Art hosts an opening reception for the Brianna Rigg exhibition, If the Ocean Was Whiskey. Brigg will fill Space 4 Art’s galleries with “contemporary mythological objects that cultivate the realm of the fantastic.” Her show runs through Dec. 4, 2011, sdspace4art.org.
