Stop SB 48 Stopped

It’s official. As of 5 pm PDT on October 12, 2011, the Stop SB 48 campaign did not turn in the required signatures to put a referendum on the ballot.  Stop SB 48 wanted to oveturn the Fair Education Act that allows for the teaching of LGBT history in schools, as well as prevents the purchase of discriminatory classroom materials.

Stop SB 48 needed about 505,000 signatures to get their referendum on the ballot.  To ensure that they had enough signatures due to potential invalid signatures, the campaign’s goal was to gather 750,000 signatures.  In an email entitled ‘We fought the Law and the Law won” organizers vowed to continue to fight LGBT positive legislation.

Many in the LGBT community were emboldened by the news, which may spark an increased interest in putting a repeal of Proposition 8 on the ballot in 2012.
