On Monday’s Late Night with David Letterman, Tracy Morgan explained that his anti-gay slurs during his stand-up act in June was “a misunderstanding” and that he was just trying to be funny.
“I just think it was a misunderstanding. I was up there working,” he told Letterman. “[Y]ou have networks, maybe like Comedy Central, where it’s premise, set-up, punchline, premise, set-up, punchline…but I came up under the old regime, George Carlin and all these people. I have to get to [my point]. I guess it became a big, big misunderstanding.”
One of Morgan’s remarks during his routine: “[I’d] stab my son to death if he was gay,” reported Kevin Rogers, photographer of the event.
Morgan did apologize, adding: “At the end of the day, I’m a comedian. I try to use my gift that God gave me to help the world, to heal the world. Not to hurt anyone. I was hurt because people came to the show who were bummed out, so I apologize to those folks who came and were bummed out.”
