Prepare your taste buds! San Diego’s Restaurant Week, a celebration of the best restaurants in the area, returns Sept. 18-23 – bigger and better than ever.

While local restaurants have served prix fixe three-course dinners at affordable prices in the mouthwatering event since 2004, this time San Diego is following in the footsteps of other Restaurant Weeks by offering lunch as well.

“We felt this would be great to implement in San Diego as this is a great city for daytime dining with beautiful weather and a wide range of cuisine options,” said Jenna Thompson of McFarlane Promotions, which promotes Restaurant Week. “Now that this discounted dining experience is available for two meals a day, San Diego Restaurant Week is more accessible to all types of diners.”

The expansion to include lunch options gives restaurants that are only open for breakfast and lunch a chance to showcase their dishes. Priced at an affordable $10, $15 or $20 for a two-course meal, lunches also give customers the opportunity to try more food without stretching their wallet too far.

As usual, Restaurant Week will continue to serve three-course dinners from an assortment of San Diego’s best restaurants at $20, $30 or $40, depending on the restaurant. Each meal includes at least three options for appetizers, entrees and desserts. Some restaurants also include wine, beer or tequila pairings at an additional charge.

Restaurants of all cuisines participate in the event and it’s possible to enjoy Italian, French, sushi and steaks within the week. Or try the more exotic flavors of Argentina, Cajun or Hawaii.

Restaurant Week, which began in New York City, expanded to San Diego in 2004 to help bring recognition to the wonderful food and introduce new patrons to local restaurants. The first Restaurant Week had 74 restaurants and the event has since grown to include over 180 restaurants throughout San Diego County.

“Whether you are looking to dine in North County, South Bay, East County or downtown, there is a participating restaurant in your neighborhood,” said Thompson.

San Diego Restaurant Week is held twice annually in September and January. Last January, more than 140,000 people dined at one of the participating restaurants during the week and more are expected to enjoy this week’s delicious meals.
