Country music star Chely Wright, 40, has married her girlfriend Lauren Blitzer, 30, in a ceremony in Connecticut just over a year since she came out.
At the time of her coming out, Wright talked about the difficulties artists faced after admitting being gay. Wright had told the Los Angeles Times, “You get good money from Jim Beam to put that emblem on the side of your bus. I was on the Crown Royal tour, and I have to say it was one of my favorite tours. They would rather you were a drug addict than be gay. They will forgive you if you beat your wife, lose your kids to state, get six divorces, make a sex tape, get labeled as a tramp – any and all of it is better than being gay.”
Announcing her wedding to Blitzer, an LGBT activist, on Twitter Wright said that her Twitter account was full of congratulatory messages from fans.
Admitting that her coming out “didn’t help my career” Wright waits to see how this milestone affects her popularity. Earlier in the year she had commented, “In coming out I had a feeling that it would diminish my wage earning, and that feeling was correct. And, I am fine with that.”
