It appears that Torchwood fans always have something to say. Now the popular BBC show has received complaints that it is too gay.
The series – which stars openly gay actor John Barrowman, who plays bisexual Captain Jack Harkness – has recently aired its most explicit gay scene yet in the U.S., in which Harkness gets together with a bartender. The scene was cut from the U.K. version.
“It’s not gratuitous sex, it facilitates the story,” Barrowman told The Sun newspaper.
The BBC, defending the show, explained on its Web site that its editorial guidelines state all sexual content should be “editorially justified and treated with appropriate sensitivity,” as well as being realistic.
“Captain Jack Harkness is an established character in the series,” continued the statement. “The audience over the previous series of Torchwood has known him to be promiscuous and bisexual so we felt the content was justified in terms of the context and characters and would be within the expectations of regular viewers.
“We aim to depict relationships whether heterosexual or homosexual in an honest and realistic way. These scenes are not meant to cause offence.”
