Country music star Chely Wright married girlfriend Lauren Blitzer this weekend at a private estate in Connecticut. The wedding comes just one year after Wright announced that she was a lesbian – a confession that shocked the country world and proved to be a painful experience for the singer.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Wright spoke of the difficulty she faced after coming out in May 2010, noting that the county music industry was less than accepting of her lifestyle. “They would rather you were a drug addict than be gay,” she said in an interview. “They will forgive you if you beat your wife, lose your kids to the state, get six divorces, make a sex tape, get labeled as a tramp – any and all of it is better than being gay.”
Wright noted that she was able to “get through” the challenging experience thanks to the love and support of friends, family and fans who encouraged her during that difficult time.
Little more than a year after coming out, 200 guests joined the couple to celebrate their journey to wedded bliss at the home of Blitzer’s aunt. The brides wore stunning white gowns designed by Jose Dias, and were married by a reverend and a rabbi.
