Mere days after Governor Jerry Brown signed the FAIR Education Act in the interest of honest, inclusive historical teaching throughout California’s schools, socially conservative opponents of the act launched a referendum campaign to repeal the measure and end “corruption disguised as freedom.
Activists working to challenge the FAIR Education Act gathered 504,760 signatures – some of which were secured after uncertain participants were encouraged to sign, “so the people get to vote.”
In an attempt to defend the hard-won measure for LGBT-inclusive history curricula in California schools, the San Diego Democratic Club has invited Equality California Executive Director Roland Palencia and San Diego Unified School District Trustee Kevin Beiser to attend next week’s August 25 meeting and educate club members on the meaning and implementation ramifications of the FAIR Education Act.
The meeting is open to the public, and all interested parties are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m., and the meeting is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. The San Diego Democratic Club meeting will be held at the Joyce Beers Community Center at 1220 Cleveland Avenue.
