Comedian and former television host Adam Carolla is facing backlash from the LGBT community after making anti-gay comments last week on his podcast. GLAAD issued a statement Tuesday in response to Carolla’s hateful commentary on “The Adam Carolla Show,” urging networks and advertisers to rethink their support of the former “Loveline” host.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Carolla said during his podcast that the gay community’s efforts to achieve equality were “ruining his life,” and suggested that gay people should use the letters “YUCK” to describe themselves rather than “LGBT.” He went on to ask listeners, “When did we start giving a s–t about these people?”
Herndon Graddick, GLAAD’s senior director, was quick to respond to Carolla’s anti-gay tirade, stating, “Given his history of anti-gay and racist comments, networks and advertisers should know what their money is supporting if they choose to hire Adam Carolla.” Graddick added, “The gross intolerance that he tries to pass off as comedy should not have a place on our airwaves.”
Entertainment Weekly reports that Carolla offered a vague apology to the gay community, stating simply, “I’m sorry my comments were hurtful. I’m a comedian, not a politician.”
