What do you get when you replace the iconic Charlie’s Angels with three sassy Latin beauties in drag, put them on The Love Boat (with Charo, of course) and then kill off a character? You get Chico’s Angels 2: Love Boat Chicas, just one of four original full-length stage musicals starring Kay Sedia, Chita Parol and Frieda Laye.
What was supposed to be just a three week run of a little comedy in 2003 has turned into years of collaboration, four stage shows, a Web site, three webisodes, five half-hour sitcom scripts and a full-length feature ready for pre-production. The second stage musical opens in San Diego Aug. 14, performing at Diversionary Theatre.
Kay Sedia (the pretty one), Chita Parol (the smart one) and Frieda Laye (the “friendly” one) take on a high-sea case to find out who wants to kill super-star Charo.
In probably the most politically incorrect, yet still appropriate interview, San Diego LGBT Weekly spoke with all three of Chico’s Angels – in character – to get a special preview of the production.
San Diego LGBT Weekly: In what way has the original Charlie’s Angels inspired you?
Kay Sedia: It’s like I saw Kelly Garret and I knowed I would growed up to be exactly like her.
Frieda Laye: I seed them en the TV and thinked, “How nice, these pretty ladies are smart and are heroes, all while jiggling! I want to growing up to jiggle like that!”
Chita Parol: They showed me that I can be sexy and kick butt!
Tell me a little bit about you? Which Charlie’s Angels are you most like?
KS: Well, I am a high fachon model/detective/Tupperware lady, all profechons where I use my booty. So obliviously, I’m exactly like the bootyful, Kelly Garret.
FL: I hold many profechons – “massuse,” “dance hostess” and many others that juse quotation marks. Because I’m a natshral blonde, I most like Jill Monroe, but I like K-Mart, so I a little like Kelly, too!
CP: I’m a no non-sensical career girl who uses her kicks for dancing and butts! I have to keep the other girls en check so I’m a lot like Sabrina Duncan and Julie Rogers mixed together, but I look like Kelly.
What is your best detective skill?
KS: Oh, definitely, it’s my ability to juse my booty to solve a case. Ju know, when ju’re this pretty, people just want to help ju!
FL: I don’t know if it a skill, but I willing to juse my sexy “Talents” to got infromachon. I also willing to get money for it. Is that a skill?
CP: My ability to think things through and weigh the facts is probably it, and that I’m willing to beat someone up.
What is this case about?
KS: This case a real shallenge for me, I have to disguise myself to conbince peoples I am Charo, eben though she so musg heavier then me.
FL: It crazy! En this case, I discober that maybe my sexiness go beyond mans!
CP: I can’t tell you anything about the case, because of detective/client parlayance, but I can tell you there is nothing going on with me and bossman!
Is there a moral to the case or is it just madcap fun?
KS: Oh it’s madcap, but I learn sometines people have reasons for wanting to kill jur childhood idols.
FL: I think we that love come in any shape, age or profechonal relationchip. Ohhhh, that’s why they call it The Love Boat!
CP: Sometimes friends, should stay friends. What’s madcap? I don’t wear hats.
