“Sesame Street” has evolved into a cultural icon for children (and their parents) across the country – and besides Big Bird and Elmo, perhaps two of the show’s most well-known characters are the stripe-sporting, rainbow-hued roommates Bert and Ernie. For decades, the puppet duo has lived and learned together on the air – and now, in the wake of increasingly prominent activism on behalf of LGBT marriage equality and social acceptance, some gay rights advocates are circulating a petition asking that the two muppets get married.
Media reactions to the petition thus far have been mixed. While speculation concerning the nature of Bert and Ernie’s relationship has abounded for years, some feel that when it comes to the youngest “Sesame Street” audience members (children ages 2-4), references to so-called “adult passions” are simply inappropriate – no matter how socially laudable or symbolic they may be.
However, others see the proposed muppet nuptials as a valuable opportunity to plant the seed of acceptance at an early age. In an opinion piece for the Washington Post, one writer suggests that Bert and Ernie’s friendship “was that mix of intimacy, respect and cranky familiarity that are the foundations of a good relationship;” and that a wedding between the two would not only be in accordance with “Sesame Street” producers’ mission to promote “respect & understanding” and “emotional well-being” for children, but also serve to give LGBT children a sense of familiarity at an early age – something that just might aid in the prevention of dangerous reactions to discrimination and LGBT suicide later in life.

Lair Scott of Oak Park, IL should be ashamed of herself! Our rights to marry are serious and in my opinion Lair Scott is doing NOTHING to help the cause, in fact she is making a mockery of it!!!!
