FAIR Education Act promotes LGBT equality in schools

Recently passed in California’s state Senate, and now officially signed into legislation, the FAIR (Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful) Education Act has shown immediate promise to protect marginalized teens in public schools, ensuring students have the opportunity to learn about all spectrums of LGBT people, the disabled, and members of other cultural groups.

Up until the bill was passed, California residents in support of the FAIR Education Act rallied to spur Governor Brown to sign the bill into legislation.

As a part of the FAIR Education Act, California students will now have a unique opportunity to learn about contributions made by the LGBT community within the state and nation, ranging from political leaders to social activists.

Now signed into law, the FAIR Education act will aim to “update references to certain categories of persons and additionally would require instruction in social sciences to include a study of the role and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, persons with disabilities, and members of other cultural groups, to the development of California and the United States,” according to the passed Senate Bill 48 language.

The FAIR Education Act will aim to prepare students to enter a global marketplace free of bias and discrimination against diverse people.
