The iconic, handsome and famously unwed Brad Pitt once said that he and his partner, Angelina Jolie, would wait to marry until gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals enjoyed the same marriage rights as straight couples.

Now, in response to the New York legislature’s recent decision to legalize same-sex marriage, Pitt, 47, tells People Magazine that, while it is “encouraging” to see the state standing in support of marriage equality, it is also “each American’s Constitutional right to marry the person they love, no matter what state they inhabit.”

Pitt adds that, while he applauds New York marriage equality, “no state should decide who can marry and who cannot.”

The actor went on to thank LGBT rights activist and advocates for their difficult and enduring work in support of same-sex marriage, and say that he hopes “someday soon” to see an end to marriage discrimination so that “every American will be able to enjoy their equal right to marriage.”
