Neil Patrick Harris has publicly confirmed his engagement to long-time partner David Burtka in the wake of New York’s historic vote to legalize gay marriage.
Harris — who together with Burtka is raising 8-month-old twins Harper Grace and Gideon Scott (born via surrogate) — tweeted over the weekend that he and his boyfriend proposed to one another over five years ago but never had the opportunity to legally wed.
“We’ve been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date,” Harris tweeted.
ABC News reports that the popular actor and awards show host was active on Twitter in the hours leading up to New York’s vote for marriage equality, petitioning in favor of the measure and later celebrating with thanks to everyone who worked and voted in order to make gay marriage a reality in New York state.
Upon learning of the new law, Neil Patrick Harris wrote, “It PASSED! Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!!”
Harris and Burtka have no immediate wedding plans.
