Another presidential hopeful has joined GOP candidates Newt Gingrich and Tim Pawlenty as a victim of the “glitter bandits.”
The most recent politician to be “glittered” is Minnesota Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.
According to the Star Tribune, Bachmann was the subject of a glitter shower Saturday after delivering a speech at the RightOnline Conference in Minneapolis. In an act of protest against the Congresswoman’s anti-gay policies, a gay rights activist unloaded a container of glitter on Bachmann as she strolled off stage to meet with supporters.
A glitter-covered Bachmann took Rachel E.B. Lang’s attack in stride, smiling and continuing to greet supporters as if nothing had happened.
As Lang was being hurried out of the conference by security, she shouted “You can run, but you can’t hide.”
Lang’s exclamation was in reference to a Minnesota church ministry called “You Can Run But You Cannot Hide”, an organization that seeks to ban same-sex marriage.
Lang reportedly issued a news release to address her solo glitter mission, explaining that although her response to Bachmann’s anti-gay policies was “light-hearted”, the issues should be taken seriously.
She stated, “Bachmann’s support of groups like ‘You Can Run But You Cannot Hide’ show exactly how extremist she is — she in no way represents the values of Minnesota and certainly does not represent the values of America.”
Sources report that Lang, a straight woman with many gay relatives, expressed delight for having inducted Bachmann into the “Glitter Hall of Fame.” She added, “until politicians stop their anti-gay attacks on families like mine, people will continue to stand up for equality and the freedom to love whoever they want.”
