Former GOP leader pushes for marriage equality in New York

Ken Mehlman, former Chairman of the Republican National Committee, has come out in support of New York marriage equality and taken it upon himself to promote the legalization of same-sex marriage amongst Albany’s GOP senators.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Mehlman came out last August and told his colleagues that he is gay. Now, as he attempts to bring crucial swing votes to the fight for New York marriage equality, he reports that the Republican senators he has spoken with are keeping an open mind.

With just one week left in the New York legislature’s scheduled session and the vote for same-sex marriage drawing near, Mehlman and other marriage equality advocates are fighting hard for support from the half-dozen as yet undecided Senate voters.

Ken Mehlman served as Republican National Committee chairman from 2005 to 2007.
