San Diego LGBT Weekly won a record 20 awards at last night’s San Diego Press club’s 44th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards. With these awards, LGBT Weekly has now won a total of 77 awards for journalism excellence since it was founded in 2010.
Over 400 press and PR professionals mingled among 18 restaurants, nine wineries, beer from Stone Brewery and Bay City Brewery and music from Mulligan Stew at the Jacobs Center at Market Creek.
The San Diego Press Club’s Journalism Awards are among the largest regional competitions in the United States and honor outstanding work in print, broadcast and online journalism. Last night’s event was emceed by Hal Clement. Special awards went to The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Andrew Kleske (Harold Keen Award); PR professional Rick Griffin (Andy Mace Award) and sustainable seafood advocate Tommy Gomes (San Diego Press Club Directors Award).
LGBT Weekly won seven first place, nine second place and four third place awards. “The spread of awards covered a wide range of categories from the contributions of our columnists and feature writers to our investigative reporting where we won all three awards,” said Editor Steve Lee. “These awards demonstrate our depth and quality of coverage and I applaud my team of writers for another year of outstanding work.”
Among those honored were political columnist Joel Trambley, investigative journalist Thom Senzee, feature writer Victor Hoff, entertainment writer Tom Andrew, food critic Lance Ryder, movie reviewer Ted Gideonse and columnist Nicole Murray Ramirez. Publisher Stampp Corbin, Editor Steve Lee and Art Director Jeff Jungblut were also honored.
