LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Founded in November of 1977, California Cryobank has spent four decades helping create tens of thousands of traditional, LGBT, and single parent families. To celebrate their 40th “Spermiversary”, Cryobank has set out to help make 40 family dreams come true by giving away free donor sperm for 40 days.
“We wanted to do something significant to celebrate our 40th anniversary,” explains Co-President Pamela Richardson. “Nothing is more significant than helping create a family.”
It may take several insemination cycles to achieve a successful pregnancy, and California Cryobank hopes to help these 40 families all the way to the finish line.
“It is always exciting to be able to help our clients on their journey,” said Co-President Richard Jennings. “But the response we saw on our Facebook page that first day completely inspired us. It’s incredibly moving to know what our services mean to so many people.”
Co-founders Dr. Charles Sims and Dr. Cappy Rothman have been there since day one. “Our focus has always been creating and protecting healthy families through our donor sperm and egg, and cord blood divisions. Helping these 40 families is a perfect way to both reflect back on our history and also look forward to the future,” said Sims.
“It has been an honor to be a part of so many incredible stories,” added Rothman. “Standing in the broom closet where we stored our first storage tank in 1977, if someone had told me that one day we would eventually play a part in creating almost 100,000 families, I would have thought they were crazy.”
Less than 1% of applicants eventually become California Cryobank donors. The strict screening process includes high specimen quality standards, repeated communicable disease testing, physical exams, a three generation family medical history review, genetic screening, a clinical psychological assessment, and a criminal background check.
