SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Diego Councilmember Chris Ward (District Three) has praised the quick removal of a plaque honoring the Confederacy in San Diego’s Horton Plaza Park Wednesday.
“This morning, San Diego City staff acted quickly and decisively to remove a plaque honoring Confederate President Jefferson Davis from Horton Plaza Park in Downtown,” said Ward. “While some may see many sides to this issue, monuments to bigotry have no place in San Diego. Thank you to the San Diego citizens who raised this issue and pressed for action, Mayor Kevin Faulconer for quick direction, and to everyone at the city who moved without hesitation to stand clearly on the side of what’s right.
“We are tragically reminded in the wake of deadly domestic terrorism of our responsibility to actively bend the arc of the moral universe towards justice with our work. This is a small but critically important step to ensure San Diego remains a safe and inclusive place, and we will continue to confront the symbols and ideology of white supremacy and Neo-Nazism that threaten the values that make our city and country great.”
Councilmember Ward represents San Diego’s Third Council District including the communities of Downtown, Little Italy, Bankers Hill, Mission Hills, Middletown, Hillcrest, University Heights, North Park, Normal Heights, Old Town, South Park, and Golden Hill.
Hell why not remove all the history that offends a small group of overly sensitive people who want to make US history into their own image.

Structural racism is real, and it lives in the symbols and icons that are reminders of structural inequity. We will not have a truly free country without the removal of said symbols. American history has a terrible tendency to erase the ‘truth’ of black and brown bodies that are part of it. To say a ‘small group of overly sensitive people’ is shocking. This country is made up of many who are not white, not able bodied, not male, not wealthy. It is time they are given a voice and a choice––and granted inclusion into history. As someone who teaches history at the university level, I’m appalled at how often students have only been exposed to white, male, Eurocentric history. US history, to be truthful, must be remade into the image that includes all the bodies and minds who were excluded from it for centuries.
Just stop. Go take a history class and understand the difference between treason and a disagreement about thought.
