Mayor Faulconer’s support of trans military generates hate mail

Kevin Faulconer

When President Trump attacked our transgender brothers and sisters in the military Mayor Faulconer immediately issued a statement in support of transgender Americans serving in the military. Mayor Faulconer’s stand received countless responses from San Diegans almost all of them attacking him and full of hate. Here are some examples that I can print in this column; many I could not!

“You f—king Democrat in Republican clothing.”

“Transgender is an illness.”

“Faulconer, you’re an embarrassment.”

“Creepy.”

“Women shouldn’t be protected by men who think they are women.”

“You are an insult.”

“Best to just keep quiet Mayor.”

“The military also doesn’t allow big giant fat people, drug addicts, felons and you’re just showing how totally ignorant you are.”

The facts are that Kevin Faulconer has been supporting LGBT equality since his days on the City Council. In fact, just days after being elected mayor of San Diego he accepted the national co-chairmanship of the National Mayors for Marriage Equality organization (over 500 American mayors). His wife Katherine (the first lady of San Diego) accepted the position of co-chair of the San Diego AIDS Memorial Task Force and has become an articulate and visible advocate. The Faulconers have brought their two young children to LGBT events and Kevin Faulconer is indeed a friend to our community.

So my question is how many of you ever communicated your appreciation for his many stands in support of our full equality? He always hears from the haters, homophobes, etc. Let him also hear from us. Thank you for listening.

The Human Dignity Foundation’s treatment of Auntie Helen’s and Lambda Archives

Since the mismanagement and scandal of hundreds of thousands of dollars at the Human Dignity Foundation, its “new leadership” has acted like everything is OK and they are doing fine. The truth is Auntie Helen’s has had the rug pulled out from under them and had to close their store on El Cajon Boulevard.

And now the Human Dignity Foundation may be giving the Lambda Archives the boot and kicking them out of their building, claiming that the Archives never really signed a lease as the Foundation is trying to sell that property (where the Diversionary Theatre is also located) since the Foundation needs to put back over $500,000 into an AIDS Fund that was mismanaged.

The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation should be more transparent and honest with the public rather than just hiding their true situation and dealings. I agree with many of the founders and past board members that they should close their doors and turn what money they have over to the prestigious and respected San Diego Foundation.
