As a progressive Christian, I believe there are many names for God and many ways to a loving God; this article reflects one of those ways. Take from here what works for you. Celebrate life with joy and peace!
Last week, in response to the shocking and appalling presidential tweet declaring his plan to ban all transgender personnel serving “in any capacity” in every military branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, I sent out a communique to our mailing list. We cannot remain silent.
As a community of faith, our core values include “justice” and “inclusion.” We are all beloved children of God, regardless of race, origin, sexual orientation, sexual identity or expression. No one is left behind.
First, I want to say to my transgender sisters and brothers, “I love you.” You are beautiful, gifted and worthy to be treated with dignity, not discrimination. We stand with you and will fight for your God-given rights as citizens of the world. We acknowledge with gratitude the transgender military personnel who put their lives on the line to fight for our freedoms.
Second, now, more than ever, we need to stand together in solidarity. When one part of our community is treated unfairly (attacked), we are all treated unfairly. Reach out to your transgender friends and relatives, let them know how much you love them and support them.
Third, let us act. Utilize social media in a strong but respectful, positive way. Call your Congressperson (202-225-3121) or email her or him to express your views. Or call (202-456-1414) or email (www.whitehouse.gov/contact/) The White House, as I did today (I had to try several times – and it’s worth it!). Stand up loudly and proudly with and for our transgender siblings. We are family!
And finally, keep the cause of social justice, human rights and equality in prayer. These values may be debated, but God is more powerful than any attack, any prejudice. God is love. Of faith, hope and love the greatest of these is Love.
