PASADENA, Calif. — The Laurel Foundation, which has for 25 years sponsored camps for children infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, has expanded their mission to host the first free trans and gender non-conforming youth camp program July 30- Aug. 3. With support from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, kids from all over the nation, many for the first time, will experience the joys of summer camp and the freedom to be themselves.
As President Trump recently turned his back on the trans community, The Laurel Foundation has doubled down its commitment to being a trusted and safe resource of both physical and mental well-being for transgender and gender non-conforming youth.
“The President’s action to reinstate the Federal Government’s ban on the transgender community’s right to serve in the U.S. Military is a big step back in our fight for inclusiveness for all humans,” said Margot Anderson, Founder and CEO of The Laurel Foundation. “It is now more important than ever for us to provide a safe haven for all transgender and gender non-conforming youth that already face difficult odds in feeling safe and equal. President Trump may be turning his back but we never will.”
The program is based on traditional camp programs, yet caters to the physical health and mental well-being of youth (ages 10-17) who are gender non-conforming and transgender. The program will empower trans youth in an accepting environment, with volunteer trans role models where they are free to be themselves and feel the support of others.
