WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality (GLMA), and several other prominent LGBTQ groups announced that they will join Our Lives on the Line’s nationwide day of action July 29 to continue the fight against the Republican plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act. For the day of action, these organizations will join with other health care advocates and progressive groups working to hold Republicans accountable for their efforts to take health care away from millions of Americans — a plan that would undo gains in coverage for LGBTQ people and target the 1.8 million LGBTQ adults covered by Medicaid.
In addition to HRC and GLMA, new partners include: Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders (SAGE), National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), and Family Equality Council. The over 50 organizations join a growing list of partners — including The Women’s March, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and MoveOn.org — who will be mobilizing across the country on July 29 to hold Republicans accountable for their deeply unpopular plan to take away health care from millions.
“Through multiple failed efforts, Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell have cynically tried to rip health care from millions of people, threatening the lives and health of low-income senior citizens, women, children, LGBTQ people, and people living with HIV,” said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy. “HRC has and will continue to stand strong against destructive proposals to repeal the Affordable Care Act and destroy Medicaid. Any health care proposal should improve the health of individuals — not put their lives at risk.”
“Efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and the various replacements proposed by House and Senate Leadership in recent months and weeks have one thing in common — they will make healthcare worse for those with the greatest need,” said Family Equality Council CEO Rev. Stan J. Sloan. “LGBTQ Americans will be disproportionately affected by cuts to Medicaid: remember that LGBTQ people — particularly transgender people, LGBTQ people of color, and LGBTQ parents — are significantly more likely to be living in poverty. America should, and can, do better than these misguided attempts at health care reform, that would only increase the vulnerability of already marginalized communities.”
July 29, Americans in communities across the country will join forces to stand against Congressional Republicans’ draconian and rushed plan to take health care away from millions, including a national event in Washington, D.C. and rallies across the country.
