San Diego Democrats for Equality and Log Cabin Republicans San Diego issue joint statement condemning Virginia park shooting

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The San Diego Democrats for Equality (SDDE) have joined with the Log Cabin Republicans San Diego (LCRSD) to issue a joint statement condemning today’s shooting in a Virginia park.

Around 7 a.m. today a gunman opened fire on a group of Republican lawmakers practicing for a congressional baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia, hitting House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and a staffer for Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas). Two U.S. Capitol Police officers and a Tyson Food employee were also injured. The gunman identified as James T. Hodgkinson died from his injuries.

The joint statement signed by SDDE President Will Rodrigues-Kennedy and LCRSD President Gina Roberts follows:

The San Diego Democrats for Equality and Log Cabin Republicans San Diego stand together today in condemning the use of violence to make political statements. While we do not agree on many issues; to strike violently against another in an effort to effect the political process is an affront to our democratic republic and our nation.
Our thoughts are with the families of those affected by this tragic act of violence and we join together in our best wishes for a speedy recovery for Congressman Scalise, the Capitol Police, and the Americans injured in today’s attack. We also applaud the heroic actions of the Capitol police in ending this attack.
Moving forward, may this terrible incident inspire us to reach common ground and work together to improve our country and our relationships within our unique and amazing nation, and not allow the political dialogue to digress into an unproductive blame game.

In Solidarity,

Will Rodriguez-Kennedy President, San Diego Democrats for Equality   Gina Roberts President,     Log Cabin Republicans San Diego
