LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Since Novaya Gazeta broke the news, Grindr for Equality has used the app’s reach in the Chechen region of Russia to continuously update users who may be in danger. Along with their regular weekly Russian safety messages, Grindr has linked users in Chechnya to news sources reporting the details of the situation as they have emerged. Grindr has worked with the Russian LGBT Network (Российская ЛГБТ-сеть) to distribute the emergency hotline number and email addresses set up for aid and evacuation.
“Grindr for Equality is gravely concerned about the atrocities occurring in Russia and is devoted to raising awareness of the danger Chechen LGBTQ people find themselves in,” says Jack Harrison-Quintana, director of Grindr for Equality. “We are dedicated to opposing anti-LGBTQ violence across the globe and urge our users to support the cause in Chechnya today.”
These atrocities come as the latest in a long line of homophobic actions by the Russian government as well the persecution of Chechens based on political and religious affiliation. For those outside of Russia wishing to help, Grindr is asking that people to sign this petition and donate to the efforts underway to oppose this reign of terror.
