Holy Week schedule
Holy Week, the last week of Lent before Easter, begins with Palm Sunday in which we commemorate Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, followed by his arrest and crucifixion. On Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday), we observe Jesus’s institution of the Last Supper and message of discipleship by washing his disciples’ feet. On Good Friday we remember Jesus’s crucifixion and death, and on Holy Saturday we recall God’s salvation history beginning with creation and culminating in Jesus’ resurrection.
April 9, Palm Sunday
We mark Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, which was followed by his arrest and crucifixion.
8:00 a.m. Liturgy of the palms and Eucharist
10:00 a.m. Gather in the courtyard for a Brazilian Samba dancer-led procession around the block, while we carry palms. Following the procession is a service in the Cathedral with the Passion narrative.
1:00 p.m. Misa en español, Liturgy of the palms
April 12, 7:00 p.m., Tenebrae
We meditate on the events in Jesus’s life between the Last Supper and the Resurrection. This quiet, candlelit service of light and shadow is punctuated by haunting music and the sound of the “earthquake” at Christ’s tomb. All congregants leave the Cathedral in the dark.
April 13 Maundy Thursday
We mark the day Jesus hosted the Last Supper and washed his disciples’ feet. During this service, congregants may participate in foot washing. The altar is stripped, and the congregation leaves in silence.

April 14, Good Friday
We remember Jesus’s crucifixion and death.
12:00 p.m. Prayer service with meditation and singing. Bishop James Mathes presides.
7:00 p.m. This Good Friday liturgy service (no Eucharist) is chanted and includes an invitation to pray around the cross.
April 15, The Great Vigil of Easter, 8:00 p.m.
We begin in darkness, retelling the stories of redemption, then the lights are raised and the Bishop will pronounce Easter. The Cathedral Choir sings the beautiful candle-lit vigil. Bishop James Mathes presides. A champagne reception follows in the Great Hall.
April 16, Sunday of the Resurrection, Easter Day
8:00 a.m. Eucharist
10:30 a.m. Eucharist with combined St. Cecilia Choir and Cathedral Choristers. Bishop James Mathes presides, Dean Penny preaches.
12:00 p.m. Easter Fiesta with tamales, mariachis, a pinata, and a bounce house
1:00 p.m. Misa en espanol
