SAN DIEGO—Family Health Centers of San Diego’s (FHCSD) first Spirit of the Barrio luncheon of 2017 will feature a discussion about the current global refugee crisis and its impact on the region. San Diego has historically taken in more refugees than any other county in California, with record-setting numbers in 2016. The concentrated influx creates new challenges for refugees, including competitive limited housing and cultural barriers in access to health care.
An engaging panel of experts will discuss how this has impacted our region, share their experience in helping families flee unthinkable circumstances, and discuss the process of asylum and struggles of assimilation. ABC 10News Emmy Award-Winning Anchor, Virginia Cha, will serve as emcee and panelists include:
- Erica Bouris Ph. D., Technical Advisor, Economic Empowerment, International Rescue Committee
- Dale Fleming, Strategy Director, County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services Agency
- Kathi Anderson, M.A., N.C.C., Executive Director, Survivors of Torture International
- Mohammed Tuama, Executive Director, Newcomers Support and Development
The luncheon will take place on Friday, March 17, at 11:30am at Logan Heights Family Health Center (1809 National Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113). Tickets are $25 and available for purchase at www.fhcsd.org/spirit-of-the-barrio. Free tickets are available to the press.
