Recent polls show Mayor Kevin Faulconer behind Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsome in next year’s California governor’s race. That Faulconer, a Republican, is polling a strong second while expressing no interest in the race continues to have people urge him to run. While I believe our mayor would make an outstanding governor, I do believe it would be a very uphill race with Republicans counting for below 30 percent of registered voters.
Did you know that the highest votes for legalizing recreational marijuana (Prop. 64) were Ocean Beach with 81 percent and Hillcrest with 80 percent!
Actress Lily Tomlin, who recently was awarded a “Lifetime Achievement” honor by The Screen Actors Guild, has been with her wife for over 45 years!
Our popular Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman will be stepping down in March of 2018 and I strongly support a nationwide search for a replacement. As I reported last year, many San Diegans are urging her to run for mayor. As of right now Todd Gloria is the number one choice for most voters being asked.
There is a wild political rumor going around that Kevin Faulconer and Scott Peters are thinking of switching jobs while some Republicans are urging Carl DeMaio to take on Peters again for his congressional seat.
I had a great lunch last week with our new City Attorney Mara Elliot and I believe that she will be one of the best and fairest city attorneys in San Diego’s history. Already hard at work, she is also a great mother of two boys whom she has been seen with at the Women’s March and LGBT Pride. Now that’s true family values.
A salute to Oceanside’s Mayor Jim Wood who continues to be a supporter of LGBT equality and always supports our North County brothers and sisters.
Although I didn’t always agree with former U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy, who recently got appointed to the San Diego Superior Court by Gov. Brown, I believe this openly lesbian woman is a true role model for all young women.
Now more than ever our LGBT community must support Planned Parenthood.
There are about 80 State Assembly members in our state capitol and our very own Todd Gloria was appointed to one of five leadership posts: deputy majority whip. Congratulations Todd!
When you catch the ABC-TV miniseries When We Rise, written by Academy Award winner Dustin Lance Black, about our LGBT civil rights movement next week, the actor portraying Empress I (gay icon Jose Julio Sarria) will be wearing my crown that Jose gave me before she died. Lance asked to use it for the miniseries and of course I said yes.
My friends in New York tell me that Ivanka Trump has always been pro-gay and is most certainly lobbying her father not to discriminate against LGBT Americans.
Yes, I will be playing a role in the upcoming March on Washington June 11, just as I have played a national role in all five Marchs on Washington beginning with the first in 1979.
I had an “off the record” dinner at the fabulous home of San Diego civic leader Tom Hebrank (board member of the Lincoln Club). Councilwoman Lorie Zapf, former congressional candidate and proud Marine officer Jackie Atkinson and other young Republicans were there. I was the only non-Republican and boy if those walls could talk!
The new civil rights arm of the International Imperial Court System was launched in San Diego at the recent I.C.C. meeting. You will be hearing a lot from the National GLBT Network U.S.A.
