American Riffs and Rhapsodies
This concert offers a thorough exploration of the American classical music idiom within a single program. From Henry Cowell’s evocation of colonial era hymnal music to Samuel Barber’s brief but melodically rich, youthfully optimistic Symphony No. 1, from Leonard Bernstein’s supremely swinging Prelude, Fugue and Riffs to Morton Gould’s highly unorthodox but quintessentially American Tap Dance Concerto, Copley Symphony Hall will be filled with music that is by turns bold and brassy, confident yet introspective. James Gaffigan conducts.
Copley Symphony Hall, 750 B Street in San Diego, 8 p.m., tickets from $20, 619-235-0804, sandiegosymphony.org

What the Butler Saw
This outrageous farce is one of the seminal works of modern comedy. When a psychiatrist tries to seduce an aspiring secretary, his botched efforts lead to comic bedlam involving his insatiable wife, a randy bellhop, a befuddled police officer and Sir Winston Churchill. Psychiatry, religion, marriage, government, definitions of gender and even language are all targets of British playwright Orton’s poison pen. His sly jokes and hilarious shenanigans will have you shaking with laughter from start to finish.

Visible Vaults
The Visible Vaults will recreate part of The San Diego Museum of Art’s most carefully guarded area, a place that is invisible to most visitors – the vaults where the thousands of works of art in our collection are stored. Often curators cannot put everything on view that deserves to be displayed; some works of art are too fragile, some are too light-sensitive, and others do not have the proper context in the galleries. However in this behind-the-scenes display, visitors will have the opportunity to discover nearly 300 little-known masterpieces, including works on paper, sculpture, ceramics, cloisonné, snuff bottles, tiles, and paintings.
The San Diego Museum of Art, 1450 El Prado in Balboa Park, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., adult admission $12, 619-232-7931, sdmart.org
