SAN DIEGO — A woman who shattered a glass door with rocks at the Urban Mo’s Bar & Grill submitted money orders in court Wednesday for $1,744, which represents the damages she inflicted on the popular gay business in Hillcrest.
Raquel Bonilla, 23, of San Diego, was given credit for one day spent in jail by San Diego Superior Court Judge Michael Groch and no additional time in jail was requested or imposed.
Her attorney, Jose Orozco, presented the judge with the two money orders for the damages.
“We’ll show that’s been paid,” said Groch.
Bonilla pleaded guilty to felony vandalism Oct. 20, and in light of her restitution payment in full, her guilty plea was withdrawn. She then pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace, which is an infraction.
Her attorney asked Groch that a $125 fine be reduced to zero in light of the 1-day spent in jail and he granted that request. She was not put on probation because the charge was an infraction, which is lesser than a misdemeanor.
Deputy District Attorney David McNees said the reason the charge was reduced to an infraction was because the “owner was made whole.”
Owner Chris Shaw did not attend the sentencing. He told several television newscasts as saying the door was custom made and was not easily replaceable.
The incident occurred Aug. 8, 2016 outside the business at 308 University Ave. in the early morning hours after Urban Mo’s was closed. A store security camera caught images of Bonilla and another woman throwing rocks through the door.
Bonilla and the other unidentified woman were customers inside Urban Mo’s earlier, but they got into a fight with others. Security kicked them out.
In an interview with KUSI-TV, a security guard for Urban Mo’s said an employee looked at the camera footage and got Bonilla’s name from a bank card used for a drink purchase.
The employee then identified Bonilla from her Facebook account, the guard said. Police were notified and she was arrested.
