Actress Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died at age 60.
Fisher was at UCLA Medical Center after reportedly suffering a heart attack on Friday on a flight from London to Los Angeles.
Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, 24, released the following statement through the family’s spokesman, Simon Halls:
“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” reads the statement.
Carrie Fisher’s brother Todd had told The Associated Press on Friday afternoon that his sister was “out of emergency” and stabilized at a hospital in Los Angeles. However he has earlier told Reuters, “It’s not fair to say ‘stable.’ I am not saying she is fine, or not fine. She is in the ICU.”
Fisher was best known for her role as Princess Leia in in George Lucas’ science-fiction film Star Wars (later retitled Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope) opposite Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford. She reprised her role as Princess Leia in Episode VII of the series in 2013.
Fisher was also a prolific writer, releasing her latest memoir, The Princess Diarist, in 2016.
Fisher is survived by her daughter; her mother Debbie Reynolds; her brother Todd Fisher; and her half-sisters, actresses Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher.
