As 2016 claimed the life of another entertainment icon, George Michael, stars paid tribute to the legendary star.
Michael died Christmas Day of heart failure at his home in England on Sunday. He was 53. “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” his publicist said in a statement.
“The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage,” the statement said.
As news spread of his death stars paid their respects:
“I am in deep shock,” said Elton John. “I have lost a beloved friend – the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans. @GeorgeMichael #RIP.”
Andrew Ridgeley, his partner in the pop group Wham!, tweeted: “Heartbroken at the loss of my beloved friend Yog. Me, his loved ones, his friends, the world of music, the world at large. 4ever loved. Axx”
Monday morning, Ridgeley added, “#GM had a voice that would transport u, he was the finest singer/songwriter of his generation & has left the best of himself 4 us. RIP GM xx.”
La Toya Jackson tweeted, “You have given the #world an amazing gift! What a #talent! What a #loss! We will continue to love you! #RIP George Michael!”
Boy George posted, “I am thinking of @GeorgeMichael’s family, friends and fans right now. He was so loved and I hope he knew it because the sadness today is beyond words. Devastating. What a beautiful voice he had and his music will live on as a testament to his talent. I can’t believe he is gone. I hope the Buddha will hold him in his arms.”
Madonna posted, “Farewell My Friend! 🙏🏻 Another Great Artist leaves us. 💔Can 2016 Fuck Off NOW?”
