SACRAMENTO, CA — Following his service as a San Diego City Councilmember, San Diego City Council President, and the City of San Diego’s Interim Mayor, Todd Gloria (D – San Diego) was officially sworn in to office today as the California State Assemblymember for the 78th Assembly District.
“I could not be more excited or grateful today as I get to work on behalf of the residents of the 78th Assembly District,” said Assemblymember Gloria. “I ran for this seat because I know that the issues that matter most to San Diegans like affordable housing, homelessness, environment, and transportation infrastructure need a champion in Sacramento. That is exactly what I intend to be for my constituents.”
In November, Gloria earned nearly 70% of the votes cast for the 78th Assembly District seat, leaving a forty-point gap between him and his Republican opponent. Gloria fills the vacancy left by Assembly Speaker Emeritus Toni Atkins, who had reached her term limit and was elected to the State Senate.
Previous to his election to the State Assembly, Gloria served as the San Diego City Councilmember representing the Third Council District. He was first elected to that office in 2008 and re-elected in 2012.
Since the launch of his State Assembly campaign in April 2015, Gloria has been outspoken about the critical need for increased affordable housing, particularly in the San Diego region, as well as the need for more resources to fund wraparound support services for homeless individuals. Using his experience as the San Diego City Council’s Budget Committee Chairman for the past six years, Gloria also hopes to encourage prudent fiscal discipline in the State’s finances.
“California is a state that is synonymous with opportunity, and we are seen as a leader for the entire nation,” said Assemblymember Gloria. “I am looking forward to working under the leadership of our Speaker Anthony Rendon as well as my Assembly and Senate colleagues to ensure California continues to be a beacon of inclusive, progressive policies that can be replicated across America.”
Gloria’s oath of office was given today at the California State Capitol in Sacramento.
The 78th Assembly District includes the central and coastal communities of the City of San Diego as well as the cities of Coronado, Del Mar, Imperial Beach, and Solana Beach.
