HuffPost’s ‘The Zainab Salbi Project’ explores India’s transgender community (VIDEO)

Recently, The Huffington Post launched “The Zainab Salbi Project,” an original video series covering global issues from a woman’s perspective. The six-part series follows Zainab Salbi, an Iraqi-American women’s rights activist, as she travels the world shedding light on those issues through personal stories of people who are struggling, surviving and thriving in conflict regions.

In the latest episode, Zainab traveled to India to show how the country is breaking new ground for the third gender/transgender community and how it has gone from a marginalized community in Indian culture to mainstream. “The whole process came organically, with people deciding to speak up about the plight of their community and their demand for equality. When the Indian Supreme Court acknowledged that gender is a non-binary form of identity that goes beyond male and female, the victory came as a nice surprise to many.”

In the premiere episode, “Fearless Muslims in Minnesota,” Zainab went to Minneapolis, Minnesota to understand the importance of the headscarf to Muslim women, the meaning of Islam in their lives, and how they are fighting back with their voice and actions.

Read more from Zainab here on how the third gender/transgender community in India is bringing visibility to a marginalized community and inspiring change.
