Woman admits felony vandalism at Urban Mo’s

Raquel Bonilla

A San Diego woman pleaded guilty Oct. 20 to felony vandalism of Urban Mo’s Bar & Grill when she threw rocks through a glass door, shattering it, after she had been ejected from the popular gay business.

Raquel Bonilla, 23, will be sentenced Jan. 18, 2017 by San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon. She could spend up to a year in jail, but is more likely to be placed on probation conditions that would require the damages be paid back.

The reason the vandalism is a felony is because the damages are estimated at $1,200. It is a misdemeanor if the damages are less than $400.

The owner, Chris Shaw, was quoted by several television newscasts as saying the door was custom made and was not easily replaceable.

Shaw told a television reporter he has not heard from Bonilla, but her conditions of release on her own recognizance bar her from entering Urban Mo’s or contact with the firm’s employees.

The incident occurred Aug. 8 outside the business at 308 University Ave. in Hillcrest during the early morning hours after Urban Mo’s was closed. A store security camera caught images of Bonilla and another woman throwing rocks through the door.

Bonilla and the other unidentified woman were apparently customers inside Urban Mo’s earlier, but they got into a fight with others. Security kicked them out.

In an interview with KUSI-TV, a security guard for Urban Mo’s said an employee looked at the camera footage and got Bonilla’s name from a bank card used for a drink purchase.

The employee then identified Bonilla from her Facebook account, the guard said. Her Facebook account has since been deleted.
