The Queer History Student Filmmakers Competition will launch at an exclusive fundraising event Wednesday Oct. 26 at the W Hollywood Hotel, 6250 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028.
Rev. Troy Perry, legendary queer pioneer and co-founder of LA Pride / Christopher Street West, as well as founder of the worldwide Metropolitan Community Churches, will be present to give a special presentation before the competition formally opens.
A new video competition for college, middle and high school students is launching in Southern California to expand understanding and awareness of LGBTQ contributions to society. LGBTQ Heritage and Culture nonprofit The Lavender Effect has partnered with the award-winning educational network Global SchoolNet and REVRY™, the world’s first streaming network dedicated to all forms of digital entertainment created by and for LGBTQ and allied audiences.
College students entering the Queer History Student Filmmakers Competition will produce 3-5min videos celebrating historic LGBTQ and allied figures and landmarks. The competition aims to engage students to present their unique perspectives on LGBTQ history, like student filmmaker Alex Valencia’s award-winning video about famed computer scientist Alan Turing. (Watch the video above.)
The Lavender Effect will have a dedicated channel on the REVRY™ streaming platform, providing an important and accessible new means for both expanding visibility amongst young filmmakers and sharing significant stories of LGBTQ history and culture with the world.
Global SchoolNet will facilitate the competition for middle and high school students and provide a valuable catalyst to facilitate conversations around historic contributions of LGBTQ people.
As a part of the 21st annual International CyberFair, students will share these stories by also producing and globally exhibiting short videos.
